Version 4 or version 7?
A version 4 UUID is entirely random and is the usual choice for an identifier that should reveal nothing. A version 7 UUID begins with the current time, so IDs created later sort after earlier ones. That makes version 7 a better primary key in databases, where random keys slow down indexes.
Frequently asked questions
Can two UUIDs ever be the same?
In practice, no. A version 4 UUID has 122 random bits; you would need to generate billions per second for decades to expect a single repeat.
Is a UUID the same as a GUID?
Yes. GUID is Microsoft's name for the same thing.
Are these UUIDs safe to use as secrets?
They are made with a cryptographically secure generator, but a UUID is meant to be an identifier, not a password. For secrets, use a long random token instead.
Is what I type sent to a server?
No. This tool runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you enter leaves your device.
