How it works

Most of the size of a big PDF comes from its pictures: scanned pages, photos and screenshots. This tool re-saves each picture inside the PDF as a tighter JPG, and scales down pictures that are far larger than they need to be. Text, fonts and line drawings are left exactly as they are, so text stays sharp and can still be selected and searched.

Frequently asked questions

Which level should I choose?

Recommended suits most files: a clear size drop with pictures that still look good on screen and in print. Light keeps pictures closest to the original. Strong makes the smallest file, for email or upload limits, and pictures will look softer when zoomed in.

Will compressing reduce quality?

Only for pictures, and how much depends on the level. Text and drawings are not changed at all. Always open the result and check it before you delete your original.

Why did my PDF not get smaller?

A PDF that is only text has almost nothing to shrink. The same is true if its pictures were already tightly compressed. In that case you get your original file back unchanged, never a larger one.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

Yes, scans usually shrink the most because every page is one large picture. A few scan formats (black-and-white fax style and some print-ready colour formats) are left as they are, because changing them could damage the page.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF is processed in your browser and never leaves your device.
