Hash Generator

Generate MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 hashes of any text, all at once.

Type some text to see its hashes.

How to use the Hash Generator

  1. Type or paste your text.
  2. Read the five hashes, which update as you type.
  3. Copy the one you need.

What a hash is for

A hash turns any text into a fixed-length fingerprint. The same text always gives the same hash, and the smallest change gives a completely different one, but the text cannot be worked out from the hash. Hashes are used to check that data has not changed, to compare values without storing them, and as keys in caches.

Frequently asked questions

Which algorithm should I use?

SHA-256 for anything related to security. MD5 and SHA-1 are fine for checksums and non-security uses, but both have known weaknesses.

Can a hash be reversed?

Not by calculation. But short or common inputs can be found by looking them up in tables of pre-computed hashes, which is why plain hashes must never be used to store passwords.

Why does my hash differ from another tool's?

Usually an invisible difference in the input: a trailing space, a line break at the end, or a different text encoding. This tool hashes the text as UTF-8.

Is what I type sent to a server?

No. This tool runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you enter leaves your device.
