UTM Builder
Add UTM tracking tags to a link so Google Analytics shows which campaign each visitor came from.
Enter a page address and a source to build the link.
How to use the UTM Builder
- Paste the address of the page you are sending people to.
- Fill in the source, medium and campaign name.
- Copy the link and use it in your email, post or ad instead of the plain address.
What UTM tags are for
A UTM-tagged link opens the same page as the plain address, but carries labels that Google Analytics reads when the visitor arrives. They let you see that a sale came from the March newsletter rather than just "email", so you can tell which campaigns are worth repeating. Use them only on links from outside your site; tagging links between your own pages breaks your reports.
Frequently asked questions
Which tags are required?
Source is the minimum. In practice always set source, medium and campaign, or Google Analytics reports the visit as "(not set)".
Does capitalisation matter?
Yes. "Email" and "email" are recorded as two different mediums. Sticking to lowercase avoids split reports.
Can I use spaces?
They work, but they are turned into "+" or "%20" in the link. Hyphens are easier to read.
Do UTM tags affect SEO?
No, provided the page has a canonical tag pointing to its clean address, so search engines do not treat the tagged link as a separate page.
Is what I type sent to a server?
No. This tool runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you enter leaves your device.
