What schema markup does
Schema markup is a small block of code that describes your page in a format search engines read directly: this is a product, it costs this much, it has these reviews. It can earn rich results such as star ratings, prices and article details in search, and it helps AI assistants understand your content. It does not guarantee a rich result; Google decides when to show one.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I put the code?
Anywhere in the page's HTML — the <head> or the <body> both work. It must be on the page it describes.
Can I add ratings that are not shown on the page?
No. Everything in the markup must match what visitors can see. Marking up reviews or prices that are not on the page breaks Google's rules and can lead to a penalty.
Why JSON-LD rather than microdata?
JSON-LD is the format Google recommends. It sits in one block, separate from your visible HTML, so it is easier to add and maintain.
How do I check that it works?
Paste the page address or the code into Google's Rich Results Test. It shows whether the markup is valid and which rich results it qualifies for.
Is what I type sent to a server?
No. This tool runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you enter leaves your device.
