Password Strength Checker

See how strong a password is, how long it would take to crack, and how to improve it.

The result updates as you type. Nothing you type leaves this page.

How to use Password Strength Checker

  1. Type a password into the box.
  2. Read the strength, the estimated time to crack it and the advice, which update as you type.

How the strength is estimated

The checker looks at the length, the types of character used, repeated characters, runs such as "abc", "123" and "qwerty", and whether the password is one of the most commonly used. From that it estimates how many guesses an attacker would need, assuming they have stolen a database and can try ten billion guesses a second. It is an estimate: a password built from personal details, such as a pet's name and a birth year, is weaker than any formula can tell.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to type my real password here?

The check runs entirely in your browser and the password is not sent or stored. Even so, the safest habit is to test a password of the same style rather than the exact one you use.

Why is a long simple password rated stronger than a short complex one?

Because length adds far more possible combinations than symbols do. Four random words beat eight random characters.

My password is rated strong. Am I safe?

Only if you use it for one account. A strong password reused on several sites is exposed as soon as one of them is breached.

Is my text uploaded to a server?

No. This tool runs entirely in your browser, so what you paste never leaves your device.
