How to remove metadata from a photo

  1. Choose a JPG, PNG or WebP photo.
  2. Click Remove metadata.
  3. Download the clean copy and share that one instead of the original.

How the metadata is removed

The tool takes the metadata blocks out of the file and leaves the picture data exactly as it was, so there is no re-compression and no loss of quality. After cleaning, it reads the new file again to confirm that no metadata is left. For JPEG photos one setting is deliberately kept: the rotation, because phones store pictures sideways and rely on it to display them upright. The colour profile is kept too, so colours look the same.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is removed?

GPS location, camera make and model, dates, exposure settings, software names, captions, copyright and author fields, embedded thumbnails, and XMP and IPTC data.

Will the photo look different?

No. The pixels are not touched.

Does it work on HEIC photos from an iPhone?

Not directly. Convert the photo to JPG first with the HEIC to JPG tool, then remove the metadata.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. It is cleaned in your browser and never leaves your device.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Your photo is processed in your browser and never leaves your device.
