How to verify a file's checksum
- Choose the file you downloaded.
- Paste the hash published on the download page, if there is one.
- Click Calculate hashes. The tool tells you whether the file matches.
Why check a file's hash?
A hash is a fingerprint of a file. Software publishers list the hash of their downloads so that you can confirm your copy is identical to theirs. If even one byte differs — because the download was cut short, damaged, or tampered with — the hash is completely different, and you should not open the file.
Frequently asked questions
Which hash should I compare?
Whichever the publisher lists; the tool works out the algorithm from the length of the hash you paste. If several are listed, prefer SHA-256.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The file is read and hashed in your browser, which also means there is no upload wait for large files.
How large a file can I check?
Up to 1 GB. Very large files take a little while and need enough free memory on your device.
Does a matching hash prove the file is safe?
It proves the file is exactly what the publisher released. It does not tell you whether the publisher can be trusted.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Your file is processed in your browser and never leaves your device.
