How to read keyword density
Density is how often a word or phrase appears, as a percentage of all the words. There is no magic number that makes a page rank. The check is most useful for two things: confirming that your main topic actually shows up in the text, and spotting a phrase repeated so often that the writing sounds forced. If your focus keyword is above about 3%, read the text aloud — it probably needs more natural wording.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good keyword density?
There is no official target. Text written naturally about a topic usually lands between 0.5% and 2.5% for its main phrase.
Is keyword stuffing still penalised?
Yes. Repeating a keyword unnaturally is against Google's spam policies and makes pages rank worse, not better.
Why are two- and three-word phrases shown?
Most searches are phrases, not single words. The phrase tables show which topics your text really emphasises.
How is density worked out?
The number of times the word or phrase appears, divided by the total number of words in the text.
Is what I type sent to a server?
No. This tool runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you enter leaves your device.
