Unix Timestamp Converter

Convert a Unix timestamp to a readable date, or a date to a timestamp, in UTC and your local time.

Type a timestamp or a date.

How to convert a Unix timestamp

  1. Type a Unix timestamp, or a date and time.
  2. Read the result in every common format: seconds, milliseconds, ISO 8601, UTC and your local time.

What is a Unix timestamp?

It is the number of seconds since midnight UTC on 1 January 1970. Computers use it because a single number is easy to store, sort and compare, and it means the same moment everywhere in the world regardless of time zone.

Frequently asked questions

How does it know if my number is seconds or milliseconds?

By its length. Up to 11 digits is read as seconds, 12 to 14 as milliseconds, 15 to 17 as microseconds and longer as nanoseconds. The tool tells you which it used.

Which time zone is used for a date I type?

If the date has no time zone, your device's local time zone is assumed. Add "Z" or an offset such as +05:30 to be explicit.

What is the year 2038 problem?

Systems that store the timestamp in 32 bits run out of room on 19 January 2038. Modern systems use 64 bits and are not affected.

Is what I type sent to a server?

No. This tool runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you enter leaves your device.
