What your IP address is
An IP address is the number your internet provider gives your connection so that websites know where to send the pages you ask for. Every site you visit sees it. It usually identifies your provider and rough area, not you personally or your street address, and for most home connections it changes from time to time. This tool shows the address and what kind it is; it does not show a location, because that needs a commercial database and is often wrong by a city or more.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.5 and are running out. IPv6 addresses are longer, look like 2001:db8::1, and exist in practically unlimited numbers. Many connections now have both.
What is a private IP address?
Addresses beginning 10., 172.16–31. or 192.168. are used inside home and office networks and are not reachable from the internet.
What is reverse DNS?
It is the host name an address's owner has published for it, often showing the provider, for example dns.google for 8.8.8.8.
Is the address I look up stored?
No. The lookup is made once and nothing is saved.
Is what I look up stored?
