How to convert PDF to Excel

  3. Download the .xlsx file and open it in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers.

How tables are rebuilt

A PDF does not store tables as rows and columns, only text at positions on a page. This tool works out the columns from the gaps between the text and puts each line of the page on its own row. Each PDF page becomes one sheet. Plain numbers are stored as real numbers so you can sum them, while codes with leading zeros and long numbers such as account numbers are kept as text so no digits are lost.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the result?

Simple tables with clear gaps between columns convert well. Tables with merged cells, text wrapped over several lines in one cell, or very tight columns may need tidying up.

My PDF is a scan. Will this work?

Not directly. Run it through OCR PDF first, then convert the searchable PDF it gives you.

Why are some numbers stored as text?

Values that start with a zero, or have more than 15 digits, would be changed by Excel if stored as numbers. Keeping them as text protects things like ZIP codes and account numbers.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Your PDF is processed in your browser and never leaves your device.
